King Charles III Official Birthday & Trooping the Colour
Welcome to my special King Charles III Official Birthday & Trooping the Colour CST activities page, celebrating one of Britain's most colourful and spectacular traditions.
Every June, London comes alive with the sights and sounds of Trooping the Colour, the King's official birthday parade. More than 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses and hundreds of military musicians take part in this magnificent ceremony, which has marked the Sovereign's official birthday for over 250 years. The event finishes with the Royal Family gathering on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch the famous RAF flypast – a moment enjoyed by millions both in person and on television.
Today's activities look beyond the pageantry to explore King Charles III's lifetime of public service. From becoming heir to the throne as a young boy, through his years as Prince of Wales, military training, environmental campaigning and charitable work, to his accession as King in 2022, Charles has spent decades carrying out public duties both in the UK and across the Commonwealth.
We'll also discover some of the positive legacies associated with the modern Royal Family. These include the Commonwealth of Nations, bringing together countries in friendship and cooperation; the Honours System, recognising outstanding contributions to society; The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, inspiring young people through challenge and adventure; The Prince's Trust (now The King's Trust), helping millions of young people into education and employment; The Invictus Games, supporting the recovery of wounded service personnel through sport; and The Earthshot Prize, encouraging innovative solutions to protect our planet.
No history of the monarchy would be complete without acknowledging that it has also faced its share of controversy. We'll take a balanced look at some well-known Royal scandals and crises, from the Abdication Crisis of 1936 and Princess Margaret's personal struggles, to Princess Diana's famous television interview, the allegations surrounding Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein, and the claims made by Prince Harry in his book Spare. These events have shaped public debate and changed perceptions of the Royal Family over time.
Finally, we'll celebrate with music closely associated with the King's Official Birthday and Trooping the Colour. Expect stirring favourites such as The British Grenadiers, Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia!, I Vow to Thee, My Country, Zadok the Priest, Dambusters March, God Save the King, and even Happy Birthday to round off the occasion.
Whether you're a passionate royalist, a keen historian or simply enjoy a good military band and a singalong, we hope these activities spark memories, conversation and plenty of smiles. Enjoy exploring this unique part of British history and tradition together.
