This week's virtual 'Dementia Cafe' had a theme of 'True Colours'.
We asked members to come along to the group wearing something of their favourite colour. We asked people why those colours were their favourite? Did they find that colour particularly calming or stimulating? Did it match their eye or hair colour? Was the colour choice based on a happy memory? Or was there something else?
We then moved on to our pictures and songs.
Just to note, if you use these materials - and please feel free to do so (I can send the photos file if you need it?), bear in mind you can use just a few or all of them, according to the level of cognitive ability of your group and the length of time of your session. Simplify and thin out if you need to, give clues such as first names, or just focus on the songs if you want a shorter session.
As I usually say, enjoyment and engagement are key to the session. Reminiscences and story telling are to be encouraged, as well as time to reflect or repeat questions. Getting through the content should be far less of a priority.
