Christmas & New Year are times of celebration - families and friends coming together, taking a break from the busyness of everyday life to reflect, relax and enjoy the specialness of presents, decorations, and good food and drink. A bit of festive cheer can also, of course, lift everyone’s spirits.

Christmas carols, and many Christmas & New Year songs and films, are often reflective or even a little melancholic. However, there is also plenty of humour to be found - especially in funny TV moments and well-loved comedy clips.

Take a few minutes to think about amusing things that may have happened to you or your family over previous Christmases and New Year celebrations:

  • presents that needed to be re-gifted

  • lumpy gravy

  • everyone asleep after dinner (and snoring!)

  • children or pets causing festive mayhem ...

Ask members to add to this list.

These shared experiences often raise smiles and laughter.

There are also funny TV & movie clips to explore ...

  • 'White Christmas' – 'Sisters' drag scene

  • 'The Vicar Of Dibley' – sprout eating competition

  • 'Morecambe & Wise Christmas Special' – Angela Rippon "Let's face the music and dance" or Andre Previn

  • 'The Two Ronnies Christmas Special' – four candles or 'Mastermind'

  • 'The Good Life' - exchanging Christmas presents

Finally, there are also Christmas songs that are intentionally — or unintentionally — funny. Here are a few examples:
