About Me

Simon O’Donovan MBE has worked in NHS Wales for most of his adult life, supporting people with dementia, their carers and families and developing and improving services to benefit this client group.

He recently retired from working as a Community Mental Health Nurse within a Young Onset Dementia Service and continues to contribute to weekly CST 'Friendship Group' sessions as a volunteer co-facilitator.

He has been keeping a weekly 'Young Dementia CST Blog' to share and archive tried and tested activities resources, with the ultimate aim of providing an 'off the shelf' resource library of weekly themed CST sessions which can be used on rotation throughout the year.

The main aim of this website is to share experience and resources freely, in order that others can dip in and out and use some or all of the materials provided in their own CST work. Thus it is hoped, facilitating and supporting the provision of uplifting and enjoyable sessions that optimise people with dementia's quality of life.

This site is not owned by or affiliated to any organisation. It’s a personal commitment, a not for profit exchange of ideas and a resource library which aims to enable more widespread use of CST approaches for people with dementia.

To this end, 'Guest Blogs' are VERY welcome, but bearing in mind that no images of clients are to be used without their express written informed consent.

Please note that some images are reproduced on this blog from the internet under the 'fair use copyright' principle, in that they will only be used for educational purposes with disability groups and in no way will be linked to profit making activities.

Guess The Adverts (Update)

This quiz complements the 'International Women's Day' activity, well sort of, because many of the adverts featured rely on gender stereotypes. But also this is a stand alone short CST activity session, based on long term memory recall. Hopefully members will not only recognise the advertising slogan, but in some instances remember the song as well. I've added a YouTube playlist below of some of the best ones to try out.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_E4d5RHyRYhQ3XF4L3-NFDN1nSj_Ls2D

The idea of using reminiscence materials such as these advertising slogans with people who have a dementia diagnosis is they access long term memory, which is often better preserved than short term memory. Also they use music and rhythm which again is often better retained in people who have memory impairment. Thus people can feel an improved sense of self-worth, in so much as they have the feeling ' Well, look I remembered those things from way back!'

To make the session even more multi-sensory, perhaps have a few advertised items on stand by to try out, for example, some Bird's Angel Delight, some Marmite on toast, a cup of Ovaltine etc etc. Overall these activities are intended to be fun and promote feelings of nostalgia and good humour. Whilst they are intended to give members' brains a bit of a 'work out', they are not intended to be used as a memory test. Rather, let people chip in with their suggestions, give some clues, maybe describe the item if people are stuck, or give the first word or initial. Celebrate achievement, highlight positive contributions, share laughter. Avoid highlighting memory failure, rather use terms as 'Oh that was a great guess' or 'Close'.

I hope your group members enjoy this activity. Let me know if I missed any obvious adverts and I will add them. PS. If you want to print this sheet off for group members to look at individually before discussing answers as a group, then cross out the answers with a black felt tip pen and run off a few photocopies.
